Can a Tree Affect my Telstra Signal

Hi Guys,

I am Farm Sitting and am on a 1000 acre property with a Telstra Tower on it and only 1 kilometer from my Van.

The signal here is pretty poor, lucky to get 3G through my portable Telstra WiFi thingy, making opening anything on the net slow to poor.

Anyway, The Tower is in a direct line to my location however there are two very large trees also in direct line of my location, other than that the land is pretty bare.

Can these two trees effect my signal and before anyone suggests to move the Van, well that is not an option.

P Lease see photo and the Tower behind them, and I am in front of them in a perfectly straight line.

Do you have a way of putting the WiFi thing on the other side of the trees to see if it gets better?
I’m thinking laptop if you’ve got one or something for that ilk.

Well true Colin, its is portable after all and battery powered as well so walking around the property whould tell me i suppose.
If it is flashing green it is 3G, if it is flashing blue it is 4G to 5G, must do that.

But to answer the question can these trees affect signal.

Only one tree will not make much difference.

However forest, especially when wet, will affect it more.

Hi Leon,

The trees 'might' be causing a little bit of signal scatter since they are in your Line of Sight to the tower but, shouldn't be causing too much trouble really.

I assume your caravan is of the 'metal skinned' variety? The walls of your caravan may actually be presenting more of an issue?

The other thing that might be causing interference is, powerlines & whether or not you have anything in the caravan that is transmitting/receiving.. this might include a microwave, tv reception, etc... other electrical signals in close proximity can cause interference with the signal...

May or may not be helpful in determining if there is a source of electrical/RF interference messing with your signal.

My advice, try your laptop outside & see if anything improves... or not...

If you get improvement in your signal when you remove either the caravan or the trees from the equation then, as long as you 'fault find' one issue at a time, you should be able to figure out which is causing you the most problems.

For the caravan, you might be able to get a signal booster, similar to what are installed in cars with fixed, hands free kits... sometimes an aerial is put on the roof to improve signal strength...

Many thanks guys have to admit there is plenty of metal around here, an old shearing shed, hay shed, seven corrugated lined cottages, plus other stuff.

Interesting, if not solved maybe Marc's idea sounds good.
