Nikon body & sigma lens query

one for the nikonians - tried an older sigma AI mount AF lens on a FF d700 -it would autofocus fine but i could not get the camera body to fire a shutter, tried MF mode, set to M but it would not take 1 frame? any ideas?

When you put it on Manual, do you mean manual shutter control or the M next to the lens (to the bottom right when looking lens on)?

Makes sense, it does the same thing on my 50mm F/1.8 if I put it onto manual aperture (on the lens) and change the aperture setting on the camera.
