80mm scopes
Hi all,
I am seriously considering swapping my newt for an 80mm range scope for portability reasons. I have narrowed it down to a TS 80mm f6 triplet plus 0.79 reducer. It is within my price range after selling my MT160. This is not 100% yet though Lewis!
I looked at other options, eg esprit and sv70, which are too expensive, and a wo gt81 which has iron cross problems. Obviously tak is way too expensive!
So, what does everyone think about the TS triplet?
Thanks!

The TS 80mm triplet would be a fine scope, though because it's just over the $1000 limit you'll likely need to pay an extra couple hundred in gst and fees.
If you're going over the gst limit anyway you might also consider the TS115 f/7 triplet which is a great value.
Alternatively you could stay under the limit and opt for the TS 72mm FPL53 doublet; images on astrobin look good and I should have a sample image in a couple of days to check for CA (I just bought the 72 for widefield).
GST is only applied under $1000 if the business sells more than $75000 annually to Oz.

Thanks Tony. My idea is 3-500mm FL range, so the 115 kind of makes no sense. Also I'd prefer fast eg f5/4
I think I should be ok to pay the 10% get or whatever it is?
Thanks anyway!

Are there any other reasonable brands I missed to look into?

The only way you're likely to find a better deal than the TS options is to buy used in the classifieds.
The TS focuser is quite good and has a 63mm female thread which a reducer can be attached to.
The adjustable WO Flat 6A II is what I use with my TS115 - it screws straight on and you can mount a 48mm filter internally. I hope to test it tonight with the new TS72.

TS also makes a screw in reducer/flattener which takes the f6 to f4.7, which is great. What's adjustable about the WO flattener?

The reducer to chip distance is adjustable via a threaded section and lock nut - very convenient for use with different scopes. It's a 0.8 reducer so it takes f/7 or f/6 to f/5.6 and f/4.8 respectively.
It's also not too pricey at US$200: https://williamoptics.com/products/a...t-not-included
It's listed for a variety of scopes but I can only personally confirm that it works with the TS115 atm.

Probably the same optics in a different body. I like the WO one better as it's cheaper and adjustable and it connects via an M63 thread.
A lot of gear is produced by a few Chinese companies and rebranded by many resellers.

Thanks Glend, the TS site says that the tsred 3" has a m63 thread and so does the 80mm, is that correct?

If you can find one, Explore scientific also has a fast 80mm triplet. Meade's are also available albeit just a rebadged more expenive explore scientific.

Thanks Glend. does the 2.5 focuser rotate?
Tony, thanks for that. I think all the scopes in this price range are similar (Chinese optics), but I will look into it

That particular model, no I don't believe it does rotate. You can tell by the photo of the rear of the scope. The R&P focusers which rotate have a lock knob on top near where the focuser attaches to the scope tube. However, TS does offer a rotation collar/adaptor which would replace the M68 to M63 adaptor discussed below:
https://www.teleskop-express.de/shop...54-and-2-.html
I have one of these adaptors, which I might consider selling (as my TS115 focuser rotates). I sold my TS80 a couple of months ago in my collection downsizing, so I don't need that rotating adaptor anymore (but it could be used on the TS115 as well).

Thanks. Question for the tak folks, can I image with a fs-78 and sky 90 reducer? It's a bit slow, but is it possible? I don't know if imaging at f6.5 vs 4.7 is a good idea though.

Nothing! I just want to change to widefield as I'm more interested in nebulae.

Don't knock doublet ED's either! They're much much cheaper and affordable. Especially if you're using a monocamera, as long as you focus between each colour. Zero difference if you're shooting narrowband.

You get ~800mm FL with the reducer. An ED80 will be around 600mm. Your scope is a lot faster and optical quality much better. I've had an ED80 and TS 90mm APO CF triplet. TBH I'd stick with the TAK.
