Modded DSLR and daytime use

I've seen daytime photos taken with modded DSLR cameras and as expected, they're usually very red or pink.

I understand that you can use a custom white balance setting which then makes the photos come out as normal, as if the filter hadn't been removed.

Is that definitely the case, or is there additional fiddling in PS that always has to be done?

After any post-processing or CWB setting, is the image exactly the right colours now or does it still show signs of being taken with a modded camera?

How do you set the CWB to be right?

If anyone can post any examples taken with their own modded DSLR's, that'd be much appreciated. Before CWB and after, or before processing and after, would be even better!

Cheers

Hi mike,
I've used the CWB regularly for daytime stuff (sorry can't post examples - at work!!) and I'm reasonably happy with the results. The "white" I've used as my standard has varied from a kid's t-shirt, boxes, sheets of white paper through to one of those $10 ebay lens cap type affairs - all taken in the ambient light you'll be shooting in, seems to work OK for happy snaps where a critical eye isn't employed.
All the best - experiment!
Doug

No Fiddling at all Mike, just shoot a white page or something similar in the normal daylight, with the sun and you use that image as a CWB for normal shots it works fine, and that is it.

First pic is modded, and the other is CWB using the frame that I spoke of earlier.

Hi Mike,
If you have the Baader Modded camera your CWB should give nice results with CWB. Not so if you replaced the canon filter with a clear glass one.
For your CWB just use a greycard and take a image of it under the lighting you shall be photographing under with AWB than load that image as your CWB in your menu.
If you don`t have a greycard just take a picture of a piece of white paper and slightly underexpose it...
here is a pic with CWB and AWB with my Baader modded 20D.
Tried to find something with a few different tones and shades.
Hope that helps
cheers Gary

A filter is the other option. I have a VLC-FF front filter which has the same bandpass as the canon filter which was removed. With this installed you can run the camera on full auto so the wife can use it The front filter stops you using EFS lenses, they physically don't fit in. EF lenses work fine.

Hi Mike,

I have used my Canon 20Da many times to photograph sporting events that my sons have been involved in without too much red showing and no extra filters used. Yes there is slight red, but its acceptable.

The 20Da isn't as red sensitive as the other modded cameras around though.

Hi Guys
I have been following this link. Same as Mike I am considering modifying my 400d. Do you customise one for daylight and one for shade and one for cloudy and one for indoor light and so on...? Do you just need to do it once for each? Or do you need to customise everytime you take a photo?
What about raw?

Gee Vincent, now your getting picky, well, It all depends on what you are going to do with your camera, If you mainly use it for imaging then you have to do nothing.

If you wish to take happy snaps then depending on the lighting it is probably better to take one CWB of a white page or similar, and use that as your happy snap CWB, then all will be well.

If however you want to be more inventive and go into dark places and lets say floresent or different type of lighting it would be better to take a CWB of that perticular situation, each time and then just use that CWB for that one off shoot.

I usualy have one image in the camera for CWB from a gray card (12% i think) taken in sunlight, I find it handles most common situations. Originaly I was going to have a few images for different situations stored on the card but never got round to it.

If like me you forget (or cant be bothered) to activate the CWB you can get pretty good result from PS using Image adjustments / Auto Color - see below

All the shots I did this year at IISAC were taken with the 20Da and CWB.
I had to tweek some because I changed location without taking a new CWB, but I was very happy with how they all turned out.

Thanks for all these examples, it's made my decision much easier.

I'll likely get my existing 350D modded now, and when I can afford it, get a 2nd body later for just terrestrial use.

Cheers
