NGC 3628 (Dog Bone galaxy??)

Hi all,

Does anyone else call this the Dog Bone? I think it looks like one.

A quick snap while a friend was over this evening, he suggested it and what a good suggestion it is.

10 x 5 min
ST8-XME @ bin 2x2
12" SCT @ F/7.4
PME autoguided.

Regards,
Roger.

More likely a lion bone. The 12" image scale pulls out quite a bit of detail.

Lion - true

The 1.68" scale looks nice, however it's a shame to not be able to use the bin 1x1 and have a larger image. The 12" SCT is largely useless at bin 1x1 with a chip as large as the ST8, I have found. The edges are very soft and elongation, as you can see in this image where the stars in top left are almost perfect but other areas of the image have various distortions.

Pat - I use a AstroPhysics ccdt67. My meade f/6.3 worked fine with the small ST7 chip but was a disaster with the ST8. This one works well with the ST8 but now my problem is the mirror and hence collimation shifts between different parts of the sky resulting in a distorted field it's always one thing or another

For me it's position isn't really co-operating.

You can see in the attached how I only have about 1 hour to photograph it each night It becomes visible from behind the tree at about 9:35 and is at the meridian by 10:45

I have been trying for some more data.
