16 bit mode problem,not working

Hi.

I have been attempting to using CS 5, (and I really mean attempting).

I have been going to into the 'image' setting and going to 'mode' to

change to 16 bit.then doing some adjustments.

However the last few times, befor I import the RAW picture.the image tab brings up mode tag,but it does not work,i.e I cannot click anything.

What have I done wrong,is there another button to press?

I can import file as 8 bit into the first page of CS 5 and use sliders, then when I open it in next page,I can then make it into a 16 bit file.

But I used to be able to have a 16 bit file for both pages of photoshop, what could the problem be??

thanks for any help,I wish I could find a 'dummies guide' to photoshopping!

Hi Chris,

I have CS3 and with it you have to specify in the RAW converter window that you want to export the image to Photoshop in 16 bits. This is done by changing the parameters in blue at the bottom of the Raw converter window ; you can change colour space, 16 or 8 bits, image size and pixels per inch.

Hope it helps.

Neale.

re bit files

Thanks Neale

I figured it out this morning, but thanks for your help,yes-by clicking the blue bit at bottom of imported file allows one to change mode.

Had I fiddle using 16 bit mode, and slowly getting some results, see hawk pic

Hi Chris,

This may be a studid question, but what is the advantage of working in 16 bit for terrestrial images such as that hawk (which is a nice pic BTW)? Do you see any real difference in terms of image quality?

Thanks and cheers,
Stephen

re bit mode

Yes Stephen there is a difference,I have noticed improvement in my images,I will try and post a 8 bit hawk, the 16 bit is better.

Over on AP in the birds forum, one of the advanced photographer put up a 'how to' and 16 bit is the way to go,also on BF they say the same, these blokes are really advanced,so I take their advice.

And it does make a difference, and I will take any improvement advice to my limited skills in PP,

Cheers Chris

There's something that should be mentioned here.

Once saved for web (JPG's) are saved as 8-bit files.

The important part here is when processing images in Photoshop, that they be worked on as 16-bit images; non-linear stretching will show banding and all sorts of other wonderful artifacts on 8-bit images. My understanding is that if you begin with an 8-bit image, convert it to a 16-bit image in Photoshop and work on it, there will be no gain as you only have 8-bits of data to begin with. This is why working on original JPGs sucks the big one.

Once processed, do your finalising, then convert to 8-bit and save for web.
