BEST CCD CAMERA around $1000.00

Hi
I am buying a Celestron CGEM 9.25 HD (Fasstar equipped) My question relates to a CCD Colour camera I can use conventionally, and later at the prime focus. If there is a camera that can be used for solar system images and deep space that would be ideal.

Any advice on camera choice would be appreciated.

Hi Evan

best thing you can do is download ccdcalc.exe, run it and input differing cameras, scopes and deep space or solar system targets. This program will give you a visual idea on how well different cameras/scope combinations work. You just select you scope, desired camera (and focal extender or reducer) and target, and it will give you an image typical of what you can expect...and info image scale, FOV etc.

Its all about image scale and FOV of a sensor with a given particular scope.

ccdcalc will give you that info. So download it and have a play. Oh I think there are some other object/target packages that can be download and input to the ccdcal database of objects. Sorry I cannot remember where they are on the webz but they are out there.

Brendan

edit:
meh...took an extra 2 mins...here are the additional image packages for ccdcalc.

Brendan,

That's fantastic I did not know about the extra packages and I use ccdcalc all the time.

Hi Evan,

To find one camera that can fit both of your imaging tasks will, I think, be pretty difficult. For solar and planetary imaging you probably don't need a large CCD in terms of area, but for deep space you do and it ought to be cooled. Perhaps, and I am no expert with such cameras, a DSLR might be a good compromise as they can do video which is what you want for planets and solar, and they have a big chip for deep space. But, there are trades to be made such as needing filter mods and or external cooling and the chips can become very noisy in warm temperatures. But, certainly there are many very good images taken with such cameras.
