newbie question

ok here's a really newbie question :

I have heard and read that the Canon EF 50mm f1/8 is a great lens for astro and non astro work..is it that much better than the standard kit lens (EF -S18-55 f/3.5-5.6) which of course I already have

why?

thanks in advance
Narayan

Apart from the fact that it is a quite a bit faster it doesn't appear to exhibit as much chromatic aberation, it is sharper further out and I found it easier to focus.

so you would recommend it in addition to the kit lens then Paul?

I suppose the question is similar to one you posed yourself some time ago except starting from a zerobase..if I were looking to get my first lens (other than the kit lens) should it be the 50mm ?

I'd definately recommend it as a part of a beginners ( you a beginner yeah right mate ) prime lens kit. For the price I don't reacon you could beat it. If you can afford it though the f/1.4 is supposed to be a better lens, but it is 5 times the price.

The next one I'm saving up for will be either the 85mm f/1.8 or the 17-40 zoom that Mike raves about.

Stop it down a couple of steps and it is a cracker of a lens for the price.
