Hi,

While a new model and not in use as much as say a 40D it is essentially a souped up 40D; so given that it like all DSLR's has a very poor Ha response it is probably one of the best DSLR cameras on the market for astro work.

Go and search the forums for info and photos about and taken with a 40D to get some idea of it's potential.

This is in french (with english trans) and quite technical but says the 50D is good as or better than 40D.
http://www.astrosurf.com/buil/50d/test.htm

The other benefit of the 50d over 40d is the screen for live view or checking focus- the 50d has 920k pixels vs 200 something on the 40d.

I'm starting to wonder if the 50D will be any good for astro imaging, have Canon attempted to pack too many pixels into the 1.6 crop? I'm planning to pick up a new Canon DSLR body soon (off to Japan in around 2 months), and its either going to be a 40D or 50D.

Interesting comparison on that French site.

It is as I suspected that Canon DSLRs have hit a wall of development and the 50D over the 40D shows almost no improvement.

The current trend of increasing the number of pixels whilst keeping the sensor size the same means smaller pixels which tends to mean more noise. So it seems the Canon engineers are mainly concerned with reducing the noise from the smaller pixels to the same levels which they seem to do quite well.

Also keep in mind to see a noticeable improvement from extra pixels it has to be something like 40% not just a few extra megapixels. Thats more of a marketing push.

Greg.

I'm more than likely going to pick up a 50D mainly for terrestrial photography, as I've just packed my 350D ready to be sent to Eric tomorrow for a Baader filter replacement
