help please

Hello
Last night i tried to set a deep space thumbnail at the thread title as my Ubuntu desktop background. This resulted in a small picture in the centre of my screen and the destruction of all the Gnome desktop icons. They are each replaced by a white box with a black z shaped line.

I googled and tried many suggestions to no avail.
Help to restore the original icons would be much appreciated.

Cheers
Chris

more from Google

After some reading it appears that what is clobbered is the Gnome desktop.
I suspect that it is not loaded at start up.
Many posts on Google suggest ways of fixing this, I have tried many to no avail.
So I would really like guidance from a Linux/Ubuntu guru.

Chris

Is there a 'Repair' option on the Install ?
Otherwise reinstall ( after copying off any personal files etc if any and just in case ).
