Cool Helium Hydride ion, HeH+, finally detected in space. "The birth of chemistry"

An improbable marriage of Helium and Hydrogen, a Helium Hydride ion,
HeH+, has finally been detected in space after a multi-decade search.

First studied in laboratories in 1925, it was theoretically known to exist
freely in space because it would have been the first molecule that could
possibly be formed after the Big Bang.

As a professor of John Hopkins put it, "It was the beginning of chemistry".

It was found using the SOFIA airborne observatory, which is the 747
equipped with the 2.7m telescope and with the dirty great big hole in the
side of its fuselage for it to look out through, and was found in the
planetary nebula NGC 7027, which is up in Cygnus.
