Hi
The best way is just image in colour. Nebula filters are fine though as on emissionline nebulae they greatly increase contrast. I use Iris to process the images, Images Plus also works very well with it. Always take images as RAW files, so that either software can process them and do accurate dark subtraction

hi little col
RGB stands for red , green and blue.
LRGB stands for luminance, red , green and blue.
If you take a colour shot using a digital cam then the camera takes 1 shot and using a bayer filter creates the rgb colour space.
When you shoot in monochrome using external filters then you make 4 exposures
1.Clear filter for luminance (Brightness)
2.Red filter for red data
3.Blue filter for blue data
4.Green filter for green data

You the use software to join the LRGB to produce a colour picture from a monochrome sensor.
Hope that answers your question

cheers steve that clears it up then so:

if i am imaging in colour the setting should be rgb

if in b/w mode it should be in lrgb and also if i wanted to do narrowband imaging do i set the camera to b/w and use s11 , o111 , ha filters for the colour channels for later processing?

hi little col
It really doesnt matter which mode you use when you use narrow band filters as the narrow band filters will only allow a small portion of the light spectrum through. If you use LRGB with narrow band filters then your software proceesing options are more. However your time per picture will increase.
I would suggest you purchase AIP4WIN by Richard Berry and Jim Burnell.
The cost is $99 US. You get a hefty book on astronomical image processing as well the processing software. They are busy with a major software upgrade which will be free to version 2 owners. The upgrade is concentrated on DSLR functionality. This manual alone is worth the price.
You can see details of the book and software on the willman bell website.
IMHO this is an essential purchase.

Regards
Steve
