Blending Ha with RGB

So what is the GO with blending Ha with RGB. Given Ha is at the deep red end of the spectrum and you have also shot Red. Are you using it as Luminance, what if you shot L as well? Where does it fit in? I recently imaged NGC2029 in LRGB and added Ha to bring out the arches and detail only available using that filter. I assume that is the primary reason to capture detail not available in broadband filters, to enhance structure. However, what colour, if any, are you assigning to the Ha. I played around with my image an finally used a bit of magenta. Is it just 'artist' license, do what you like, etc?

Glen,

Ionised hydrogen emits at a number of wavelengths but the ones relevant to us are Ha and Hb. Hb is blue and typically at about 1/3 the intensity of Ha. So, from a colour POV it's typical to add some Ha to red and a reduced amount to blue (or add magenta as you did.)

You can also add some Ha to the luminance and even use the Ha as luminance but you need to be careful that you don't end up with salmony pink colours instead of red/magenta if you make the luminance too strong.

Cheers,
Rick.

Thanks Andy, i am not a fan of PI, but that can all easily be done in Photoshop CC with layering.

Glen, if you look closely, paragraph 5 onwards is all using Photoshop layering.
