Matte or Gloss?

Do you print your astrophotos on matte paper, or gloss?

And why?

I just don't like gloss in general - I think it looks old and cheap or something like that.

well gloss is nice, shiny and in the right light very hard to see details. Matt paper allows you the views without the moving to see all the photo.

matte.
while i dont really print astro pics i prefer in most cases matte anyhow as the non-reflective surface is easier to look at.

Matte for me all the way, gloss hides details and is difficult to see in certain light conditions.

Hi Mike,
I haven't taken many astro pics that I've printed, but normally I get enlargments bigger that 8"x12" printed on Kodak Professional Endura metallic paper. I like this paper because it looks good in almost any light, and has rich vibrant colours. It's glossy paper, but I find it much easier and nicer to look at than standard gloss paper. Fuji also have similar paper, but I'm yet to find anyone that uses it in Australia.

I prefer the Matte also, not that I have printed that many. They do have a better look about it.

Cheers

IMO Matt or at least semi gloss is better, particularly if you're placing it under glass, but I mostly use gloss...

Gloss for everything. A habit I picked up in my photo-school days

Matte, matte and nothing but matte
Non reflective, warmer colour, won't pick up finger prints or stick to the pages in a album

my personal preference is semi-gloss,

should've added a semi-gloss option!

Actually I print on Ilford Galerie smooth pearl, i suppose you could call that Matte, absolutely beautiful paper, 290 g/sm, a bit expensive though.

I have used gloss only so far, because that's all I have, but prefer matte, alway have from the old film days and home processing of prints. Matte has a far more professional look especially when framed.

I've printed out matte ones, and do prefer them. No fingerprints and easier to see under lights. Thanks for responses!

I think matte is the way to go too Mike.
I haven't printed anything out for a long time but I'll need to soon.
I've also got to work out my colour balance before I do the prints.

For me it really depends on the situation.

Matte is great for no fingerprints, so when showing off a shot of the kids to parents and children, it's excellent! I use the Canon Matte Photo Card 170gsm.

I use Gloss to show off my best shots. There is something more special and 'professional' about it. Of course that also means you are more touchy about people touching it. I get the best results with Canon Glossy Photo Pro in my canon printer. (Tried kodak once but couldn't get it to work without bleeding, so I gave up wasting money on paper that may work)

Everything else is canon matte craft/photocard or paper

Matte for sure.
Gloss will stick to glass and your photo will be ruined. Can be an expensive mistake if the print is a large one.
