SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT- free scopes need deserving homes

Hi all,

By sheer dumb luck, my visit today to the Tasco warehouse here in Sydney on business, I chanced upon a bunch of brand new scopes that had been chucked into a trailer destined for the tip. Because of my work with Gondwana Telescopes, the folks at Tasco allowed me to salvage these modest instruments in order to find new homes for them.

So...

Free to deserving homes -

* There are five scopes available.

* Getting one is purely on a first come first served basis.

* MUST ONLY go to local school or community centre or kids at risk.

* These scopes have operable OTAs, but the mounts can be questionable - these are modest telescopes, so you cannot expect an EQ8 with them. Some of these are excellent candidates as dobbie mount wood working exercise. There are some modest eyepieces and simple finderscopes with these too. Carton may be damaged and/or dusty, and have been opened to check the OTA is in operable condition. All are complete with all accessories and tripod. All are ready to start observing with!

* You need to show the school, community center or the kids at risk, how to use the scope, AND post a photo here of the event.

* These are not for resale or personal use. Neither me nor Gondwana Telescopes are accepting money for these. These scopes are purely intended to help foster better educational outcomes for our children. It is also a way to become involved with local schools as amateur astronomers.

* You need to pick these up from my place here in Sydney. I really, really do not want to post these. If posting is required, you will need to pay for the postage.

The five scopes are:

1: 114mm reflector on simple push-to electronic alt-az mount - claimed

2: 114mm reflector also on a simple push-to electronic alt-az mount (yes, two are identical, just different boxes.) - claimed

3: 60X800 refractor on alt-az mount -claimed

4: 70X900 refractor on alt-az mount - claimed

5: 70X800 refractor on alt-az mount - claimed

Most sincerely,

Alex.

Wow - great catch! (Humble as these may be, it would be criminal to dump them!)

Given that it's National Science week this week (15 - 23 August), is it worth contacting the Sydney organising committee, and see if they can put you in touch with someone deserving?

Aaahhh, couldn't help myself...

Ended up checking all the scopes, OTA and mounts. All are complete and ready to start observing! Manuals, EPs, finder, charts etc. A couple have CDs too.

A dobbie mount for the reflectors is not a bad option for those schools with a handyman around in the staff or parents.

Excellent! Maybe you can keep a scope for one of those Christmas trees in December under which you can put presents for kids in need...
