Alexei Leonov dies at 85

The first man to take a space walk (amongst many other achievements), died yesterday aged 85. He was also the last surviving Voskhod programme cosmonaut.

Настоящий мужчина среди мужчин. Первооткрыватель, прокладывающий путь в космос. Покойся с миром - ты это заслужил.

Sad to hear the passing of a Russian icon
Gee I thought he was a lot older
His space walk was in 1965 so he would have been 31 yrs old
An amazing achievement considering a near catastrophe when he struggled for nearly half an hour to get back into the spacecraft with his bulky spacesuit through a portable air lock
He also was commander in the joint Soyuz / Apollo rendezvous mission in 1975
RIP

Marcia Dunn at AP reports that a spacewalk was taking place outside the

The first person to personally learn that space sucks big time! A lifetime of impressive achievements by this dedicated cosmonaut.

I bought some prints of his artistry some years ago. They really are quite good in that wonderful 1950's-esque Sci-Fi style.
