QHY8 and Nebulosity 2

Ive got my qhy8 working with nebulosity2, however one function keeps shutting the program down due to an error. When I go to the advanced section and set the frame binning to 1x or 2x all is ok. However when I go to 4x4 binning the program crashes and then wont recognise the camera until I reboot. Is this normal and is 4x4 binning disallowed with the qhy8. Im using Toms drivers ie qhy8TVDE.
Thanks for your help
Allan

4x4 works for me.. which version of toms drivers are you using?? I use the LibUSB driver found here.

That works fine on my machine...

Also, do you have the latest update of Neb2? (i dont know what version its up to at the moment)

just reinstalled latest nebulosity and drivers and still crashes when do 4x4 binning.
Comes up with the following

Debug error.
Program:\c:progfiles\nebulosit\nebu losity.exe
Module c:\program files\nebulosity2\qhy8.dll

Run time check Failure #3 - The variable package is being used without being initialised.
(Press retry to debug the application)

If you are using Tom's drivers, perhaps write and ask Tom direct.
He was most helpful when I had driver problems, and we forged a formidible friendship. He has a Messenger account which proved invaluable for instant communication.
Before you do this though, perhaps uninstall all the drivers, go back to the start. I had to but it was worth it.

?? I would ask the question on the QHYCCD forums if I were you..

I would have uninstalled the previous drivers, then installed the new ones.. the system will require a reboot (although it will not tell you this) before the new drivers take affect...

Alex
Have done so and just seen a message from someone using the latest drivers and Neb 2.0.6 and he has only 1x1 and 2x2 available . The 3x3 and 4x4 are greyed out for him. Its a small thing but it could be useful to have 4x4. 4x4 are not greyed out for me but crashes the program

4x4 was greyed out for me with the original QHY8 drivers, after installing toms driver 4x4 was available, and worked fine... I must admit, I have not used 4x4 once yet, I find 2x2 is enough of an increase in sensitivity..

I'll do a bit of reading around and see what I can find out

http://qhyccd.com/ccdbbs/index.php?topic=1141.0

QiuHY (the maker of the QHY cameras) mentioned a few days ago that he was going to contact craig stark about adding proper support for 4x4 through nebulosity 2...

Thinking about it now, I've not used 4x4 in neb2 at all, I did however use it once before in CCDCAP, which worked...

The camera supports it, as do the drivers, however Nebulosity 2 at this time does not.

CCD Cap should have come with your QHY8, if you need to use 4x4 for something, use CCDCap untill Craig adds neb2 support..

Alex.

Try the uninstall/reinstall/reboot first. Like Alex indicates the forum post seems to indicate that Nebulosity may be the Achilles heel here.
Can I ask, why 4x4? I use mine with 4x4 for aligning the goto, and centering the object on the chip, then change to 2x2 or 1x1.
Gary.

I use nebulosity 2's "frame and focus" to do align the goto and frame targets, then fine focus to focus.. I use 2x2 on some dim targets, also sometimes for Ha imaging (IC434 is a good example, 15~20min 2x2 Ha images come out nicely)

What are the advantages to 2x2 (or Higher) binning. Why would I want to do that?

it raises the cameras sensitivity. Making it capture fainter details faster. The downsides are that the image will be black and white, and of a lower resolution..

I too was in the mystery of "Binning". Untill Roger Groom explained it very well to me.

think of a Naughts and Crosses game 3 squares by 3 squares, 1x1 is one square by one square, meaning that 1 pixel is just that 1 pixel, 2x2 is 2 pixels by 2 pixels giving 4 pixels all up but only counting it as 1 pixel. 3x3 is 3 pixels by 3 pixels having 9 pixels all up but only counting those 9 as 1 pixel. so on and so forth.

Hence the more binning you do the more sensitive your ccd is, though at a catch your CCD reduces in size due to the above explanation.

I hope this laymans explanation is good enough! It cirtainly cleard things up on my end.!
