Got my modded webcam!

Got a Logitech Fusion webcam modified (my mate did it and did a MAD job on it).

Does anyone here have a modded webcam they use on the Moon and planets (primarily Saturn and Jupiter)?

I am assuming you just don't stick the camera in the EP holder and it all works, nothing works as simple as that!

I have got the software all tested. I am running SharpCap on an XP virtual machine on my Mac. Works fine and there are plenty of options to use.

Do you need to use a Barlow with the webcam? I have a 2xBarlow.

If anyone here has a modded webcam how do you capture video of the Moon and Planets and what equipment do you use??

Thank you!

In actual fact it DOES work like that !
Focus and control of exposure is required of course but you have the right idea.
What mods have been done to the camera ?

Yep it does work like that I use a modified ToUCam, allthough it's semi-retired now (I mostly do deep sky with a new CCD camera now)

You plug it into the focuser, find focus, and start playing with the settings such as exposure time and gain etc.
I use a 5x Powermate with mine for planetary and lunar imaging, I got vastly superior results with that over using my old Meade 3x barlow, there was just no comparison.

I followed this website.

http://ghonis2.ho8.com/fusionmod.html

Instead of the adapters the guy used I used a 1.25" film canister, just cut about 60-70% of it off. I will post a pic of it when I get home later today.

I had trouble using it on the sun but yet still need to test it out on lunar and planets.

Would I need to grab a 5x Barlow or is 2x enough?

Where can I grab a 5x for a good price?

It's probably best to begin with the 2x while you're getting familiar with the camera. It's also much more difficult to center a planet in a narrow field. With the 5x Jupiter takes up at least 1/3 of my screen as far as I remember, that doesn't leave much wriggle room. Depending on your tracking accuracy you may have to adjust quite often.

Once you are ready for better images then the 5x will be invaluable though. I got mine from OPT: http://www.optcorp.com/product.aspx?pid=194

Stefan,
The mod shown is just fitting a nosepiece to the webcam. No long exposer mod etc.
IMHO I'd start with the prime focus and the x2 barlow until you gain some experience and practise with the imaging software.

Stefan,
Hmmm, that looks like an image of the inside of your scope...
Are you sure the camera lens has been removed?

OK had a look inside and it appears the lens cap was not removed and the LED not removed.

Just made the mods now and will test as soon as I can.

Thank you!

Not in focus possibly needs more out focus movement and the object is off to one side.
