Bored AstroImager with New Toys

The "Rain Gods" have certainly been angered by some recent purchases in SEQ - I'm a guilty party, having taken delivery of a QSI583wsg this week.

All I've been able to do thus far is to watch the filter wheel spin around and the shutter open and close...

Tonight I setup all of the gear to see if everything would talk together with Maxim. Happy to report the QSI, autoguider, mount controller & focuser all played nicely together under Win 7. The fact that I was excited to see the focuser move in and out in response to a mouse click is testament as to how bored I really am.

As the photo shows, the jumble of cables is ridiculous. The "umbilical cord" is still in it's first iteration, being setup for my 350D. Maybe I can use the wet weekend to pull that apart in anticipation of being able to put the new camera onto the telescope next weekend.

The red box normally sits under the tripod and holds the USB hub & various power-supplies. I've been working towards setting everything up to run on 12V - bring on some truly dark skies.

The new camera looks good David. looking forward to seeing some images. Good to hear Win7 is behaving. I've been dreading having to upgrade.

Thanks Peter,

I've been stuck with being unable to use Win XP under Win 7 as a driver wouldn't work with the ShoeString Astronomy Shutter box for my 350D.

I still have to try the whole new setup out under the stars, not just in the study...

Win7 is very stable and as long as you have the drivers no problems I even got the LPI to work in Win7 32bit and the only reason it doesn't work with 64 bit is there are no drivers released by Meade. Microsoft definately learned what not to do from VISTA

You should have treated yourself to a box of double sided velco too. LOL
Congrats on the purchase. I hope you get to try it out very soon.

Thanks for the comments.

I know the cables are a mess - we'll sort that out in due course. I have a heap of double-sided velcro tape that I salvaged when unpacking some stuff at work. I'll be putting it to good use in the very near future!

Managed to put the scope up on the back deck and take an image through the camera. I was focusing on some bright lights (I think a distant sporting field) and managed to get some reasonable detail in the surrounds. At least I know the camera works! I combined the LRGB in Maxim (Didn't bother with Ha!) This was shot through light rain under a thick layer of cloud in the late afternoon - not much contrast!

Cheers
