Does a "slate" qualify as a clay tablet?...because that's what I learnt to write on.
I do remember going in a "horse and sullky?" to Casino from my grandparents dairy farm at McKees Hill, in Casino we did the shopping and returned with a block of ice for the "ice chest" . It is so nice to be able to look from the car to see the old house when I go to town and the hills that I roamed hunting rabbits.
In my first three years of school everyone went with bare feet ... soft drink Xmas only.
I remember it all as if it were only 67 years ago.
Buying groceries was fun...I will have a pound of flour..and the storekeeper would weigh a pound of flour and put it in a brown paper bag, ...and half a pound of biscuits..weigh them and another brown paper bag...
I recall when the first self service store was to open in town, the concept was unknown, everyone was saying that it could not work as they would be robbed blind.

Drinking from the garden hose and staying out until the street lights came on, Oh! and walking to school, we lived rurally and would meet each other along the journey, there was no crime, we looked out for the older population (a lot of whom would wait for us to pass for the connection) and so on.

Yep, me to Alex with a slate pencil... to ' clear ' the slate board you would wipe it with a cloth..
We had ' fresh ' cow's milk delivered to our front door, blocks of ice for the fridge before my parents could afford a real fridge.
Used a ' push mower ' to mow the lawn, went to school in bare feet, made shanghais from branch forks and rubber bands.

We had a cow. I had a small lawn mowing business with a push mower and folk wondered why I was so strong, just surviving left no need for the gym.
But hard to beat my grandfather..rotten tooth..pen knife and pliers ...he was the man's man. Me I am a softy I get the doctor to put in stitches.
