Taken at 4.30 this morning, showing that astronomy is more important than sleep. Europa in transit at top left and Ganymede at right. A rare clear and calm night. Reasonable but not great seeing.
Nice one, great to see the GRS and a couple of moons in the one frame, well worth the early start.
I considered heading out this morning but the weather forecast for Melbourne was 50/50. As it turned out the morning was nice and clear , but I'm glad someone was able to catch it.
Nice one. I filmed Jupiter this morning at about the same time. Never noticed it! But I did see only 3 moons and thought one might be behind it. Never really thought it might be in front. I haven't processed my video yet, wonder if it will show on mine. Seeing wasn't too bad apart from heavy dew. Red spot was pretty much right in the middle when I took the first set. Then I did saturn and mars, and one more set of Jupiter when the red spot was near the edge.
Thanks Glenn, I hadn't found that one but it will come in handy. I've been using the sky and telescope red spot predictor, didn't know there was one for the moons as well. Interestingly their red spot predictor was out by about half an hour a couple months ago, but now it seems to be back on track.
The position looks about right for Ganymede if it was about 4.00am on the 11th. Here's a visualisation from Starry Night. Europa was sitting about level with the GRS but can't be seen in your photo. It's pretty low contrast seen against the planet's surface. Easier near the limb.
Thanks, looks like it was Ganymede. Could have easy been 4:00 am, I got up at 3:30. Europa right on the dark cloud band at that time, might have showed up if it was in a better spot. Those moons must move pretty fast!
