Yes Martin, I remember Barclays great oysters when I visited Forster on regular fishing trips 30 years ago. We also harvested some nice oysters from an abandoned lease at the bottom of our camping ground! I went on a social tour of Wallace lakes last week where Barclays oysters were served. Still very nice but so small! I think while Pacific oysters may not be so tasty they are nice and big. Peter

Pacific Oysters seem to have improved a lot recently.
I get them Costi's. Perhaps they are Coffin Bay and not marked as such. But they are really nice, good flavour, large and creamy.

A nice Mornay sauce and grilled, they are superb.

At this stage I'm very tempted to do a trip to Cowell in S.A. this January .
Gets me away from the horrible heat at that time of year also .

Have an old friend from the early seventies who loves oysters & fishing who has done extremely well in life , always wants to pay for everything

Are oysters capable to give the consumer those health problems ?

This stuff is scary if oysters have that ability

Oysters are certainly capable of transmitting Typhoid fever (via certain salmonella bacteria). It was traced as the cause of a famous Typhoid outbreak in the UK in the 1900s, due to effluent tainted seawater near the oyster beds. It killed several people and hospitalised many more following a large city banquet. Some stories suggest that it also "killed" the industry for many decades.

I'm sure things are better now with greater attention to food standards and hygiene, BUT the possibility is always there.

There have been quite a number of outbreaks of disease or food poisoning from eating Oysters. The industry is aware of the damage such outbreaks do to sales, so they try to minimise these.
