Incoming GST ?

Since the rules changed I've bought one item from Telskop Express for about $300AUD and a few $100AUD odd from the US and UK. So far no GST. The only GST charges I seem to get for overseas purchases are from eBay, have to laugh when I get hit for $0.12c for the $1.20 connector from China but all the rest of my bigger (non-eBay) purchases come through GST free. Of course YMMV.

If the vendor hasn’t charged you gst at the point of sale
then you probably won’t have to pay. I also have only been charged gst by eBay so far.

It doesn't apply to businesses doing less than $75k worth of sales to Australia. Likewise private purchases from an individual.

Also I don't think they bother pursuing it on items slightly over the $1k threshold.

I'm waiting to see what happens when the Cheesegrater arrives, that's a big enough sale to get someone excited and I may have to do a customs declaration and pay at an Aust Post depot, have done before.

Alternatively some carriers who deliver to your door, notably Fedex - are geared up to handle GST directly and they will invoice you (and you must pay before they will deliver the item).

Hi Graham,

I ordered some stuff from B&H Photo 2 months ago. No GST whatsoever. DHL did a great job, as has always been my experience. Best of luck

Hello Graham,

I'm not sure, but I supect that B&H are still under $75k per year to Australian imports. As such, they're not obliged to register for GST.

They do a good job, so I guess this <$75k p.a. position won't last long.

As well known, Ebay do well over this limit from the get go, hence every transaction is slugged.

The collection of GST is a real dog's breakfast! Amazon and ebay rolled over and agreed to collect it (and forward it to the ATO, although how the ATO know it's all been sent I don't know). The big surprise is Aliexpress agreeing to collect it. I'm sure that they will forward all of it to the ATO.

I'm not aware of any other US companies who are acting as tax collectors for the ATO (I can't see why they would want to), they generally say that local taxes are the responsibility of the purchaser, and therein lies the problem for the government. Given the huge amount of parcel traffic coming into the country it's not feasible for any department to stop and check every item and then notify the recipient that GST is owing thus the move asking overseas companies to act as Australian tax collectors.

Don't forget, too, that this whole mess came about because Harvey Norman wanted a "level playing field" so pressured the government to stuff up what was a perfectly good system.

Maybe its just a simple cost /revenue thing in that to levy and collect on more than say $1000 (like it used to be) was grounded in a small measure of sensible and the notion that spending $50 to get $25 back is not .

Unless you can scam another to grab the loot for ya .

The point where it should have been collected is the carriers - and their aren't so many - USPS, Fedex UPS, DHL etc.

Yeah but....
I’m not sure that would catch the China Post “free post” options.
They still collect GST on minor purchases!

Just received this notification from eBay, which also mentions PayPal.

Looks like GST will be collected in accordance with their T&C's.

Cheers

Dennis
