From Melbourne last night

It was clouded out down here in Melbourne for opposition but I managed to capture Saturn in a window of opportunity last night. Seeing was mediocre at best, yet the little ASI 120MM-S pulled out the best under the conditions. I intended to use this camera for guiding but I'm having a lot of fun with it on planetary imaging while I wait to purchase a guide scope.

Saturn is a combination of LRGB Meade filters. Both shots taken with the 8 inch Newtonian on an EQ5 mount with RA motor. 9mm eyepiece sticky taped to a 2.5x Powermate . Processed in Pipp, AutoStakkert, Registax and Photoshop.

Nicely done Mick, clean and crisp planetary shot- like it a lot. That camera is definitely a step up from the DSLR...

Thanks Anthony, they do a pretty good job but not so good for birthday parties, holidays and family picnics! They can't compete with a DSLR for versatility. If I was to get into this more seriously, a filter wheel would be nice and handy but I'm not, so I'll keep using the SLR for the majority of my shots.

Thanks Leon, glad you liked them, the ASI120MM's sensitivity has the advantage over the DSLR. For Saturn using the DSLR, I have to shoot video at 1600 ISO or above and that makes the result very noisy. I can't reduce the frame rate which increases the exposure that would enable the use of a lower ISO .

Really nice Mick. Maybe I need some sticky tape to improve on planetary imaging

Thanks Tony, seeing was better than was predicted for Melbourne on Saturday night. Even cloud was predicted but when I looked outside at about 10.30 pm and it seemed to be clearing, I thought I'd take the chance and set up. The camera doesn't seem to reach it's claimed 60fps at full res but comes close if you crop the frame down to a smaller frame size. It just means then you have to be more accurate with your PA so you don't have to continuously chase the planet around to keep it in the frame.

Thanks Chris, you know what they say: " Sticky Tape fixes everything!"
