Help with DSLR B & W and luminous

I have a new Canon 1000D and apparently they can image in monochrome (B and W). Would it be possible to image monochrome using RGB filters and then combine them to make a colour image? If it is possible, would I need special filters or would any old filters work?
I don't understand what luminous images are or how they are taken but they get mentioned when talking about monochrome images e.g. the L in LRGB. Could someone explain what they are and is it possible to take them with a DSLR?

Any other information that is relevant to these questions is greatly appreciated.

Essentially no.
The B & W mode just uses the colour filtered pixels and combines them using an algorithm to create a balanced monochrome image. The light has still gome through the bayer colour array.
Luminosity images are usually images taken through no colour filters and are combined with data through colour filters to produce the final colour image.
