SG Pro is almost unusuble post upgrade

A year ago I upgraded to whatever was the latest version at that time and Astrofest was ruined because SG Pro wouldn't stay open for more than a minute or two before it would crash. I had to abandon it altogether. I put it down to the computer which had been upgraded to Windows 10.

This year I had a dedicated Intel NUC for astronomy with the latest SG Pro (2.6.0.21 I think but it could have been a little earlier) and it was stable enough to get some images, but it did nevertheless crash a few times.

I have just updated to the latest version 2.6.0.23 and within the space of about 15 minutes it has crashed almost as many times. hopeless. Can someone please tell me the newest version that is absolutely stable?

Chris

I have been running SGP for years with no issues at all, and have upgraded the version from time to time. Have you raised your issues on the SGP forum?

There doesn't seem to be any specific trigger for the crash and the application event log isn't that enlightening:

The only time I've had SGP crash on me is when I've done something silly like use the Mosaic Wizard to try to make a 200 panel mosaic haha

Other than that it has been super stable for me on three different laptops under windows 10.

2.6.0.23 is the latest stable version. 2.6.0.24 is later but also is a beta and I found it crashing so reverted to 23.

I do seem to have finally at least narrowed down the problem so I can use it for imaging. I am now using the beta 2.6.0.24 because the release notes specifically say that 2.6.0.23 did not properly support QHY cameras - and guess what, that's what I have.

Now, the crashing problem only seems to happen if I load my sgf file originally created in an earlier version. I have loaded umpteen times and it has crashed EVERY single time. If, however I open SQ Pro and using the default sequence but set up the equipment and user profile info again that seems to work. The problem is that I now have to re-create all my targets. If I try to import just the targets from the my sgf file, guess what? I crashes! There is probably just one thing in there it doesn't like but impossible to know what it is.

Take that info to the SGP forum and ask about it there. The software is widely used and the support guys are very quick to fix bugs. Chances are someone on that forum will have already noticed your problem, if its app, driver, or ASCOM related. Why suffer through re-entering if its a known problem or already resolved.

Hi Chris, try the following in order:

Uninstall SGP.
Uninstall .net platform.
Reboot.
Clear registry.
Reboot.
Update .net.
Reboot.
Install SGP again.

Wasn't there an issue with using 2.5 sequences in 2.6? There is a migration tool of some sorts to convert earlier sequences to use in 2.6.
Could be wrong

If I don't have any joy with the brand new sequence file I will try this. I have about 40 objects in the sequence, but reckon I may as well as them manually, it is only a matter of grabbing the coordinates I guess, or plate solve a previously taken image and use for that in a new object. Probably quicker than a complete uninstall of everything.

Usually when stable software packages crash its because of lack of Ram.

I've never had SGP crash yet, but I have had Startools crash on me and the error message was "out of memory".
I upgraded the PC from 2Gb to 4Gb and never had a crash since.

Update

As an update SG Pro has not crashed once since I started using a brand new sequence file. I have actually experienced this I think each time I have upgraded to the next version of the software. It just doesn't seem to like sgf files created in an earlier version.

Chris,

I've never experienced that issue and I'm still using one of my original sequence files. Must be something different in the way you have created your file or in the way you have SGP CALIBRATED?

I agree with Glen. SGPro support is fantastic and they will help you get to the bottom of your issue.
