Yet another chair

There was a recent post on what to do when it rains... and rains... and rains...

I decided that since my office chair wasn't really ideal for the dob, I might as well do something useful with my time when I couldn't get out and observe.

(Probably should have been painting the deck instead.)

That's a very nice piece of work! Hopefully it won't bring on additional new-equipment-clouds

I've been thinking about building a new astro chair and have been looking at various designs. Do you mind if I ask how much does your completed chair weighs?

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the kind words, Richard.

It weighs just over 7kg. I built it from 19mm pine.

Since you're looking at designs, I'll offer some comments.

It's much taller than necessary for a 12" dob. I'm pretty sure that I left it at the highest position that I will use for the photo.

As you've noted, the weather has prevented me from using it yet, so I've just tested it in the garage. The front brace needs some thought when changing viewing targets so that it doesn't bump into the base of the dob. I'm sure I'll develop a system in time.

As I suspected, pine may not be the best material as the support dowel under the seat is leaving small indentations in the main upright. Let's just call it a prototype and see how it goes in actual use.

FWIW, I made mine (which looks very similar) out of Jarrah fence palings. No problems with holes being deformed, although it is not as light a pine. Also I have the wide support section in the rear arm rather than the front, that way it doesn't clash with the dob mounts or people's feet so much when in use.

Jarrah should certainly be tough enough, Brian.

I thought long and hard about moving the cross-brace to the rear support but eventually decided that I would prefer it attached to the load bearing member.

Good to hear that it worked out for you on the rear support.

Never thought I'd say this to another guy, but Paul, that's some very impressive wood.
