A mediocre M78

After Andy posted that incredible image of M78, I thought i would post my mediocre version taken last month.

Nice shot! There is a bit of noise there, but the detail is pretty bloody amazing!

Thanks Dan, regarding the noise, I needed another 10 hours of integration time. 4 hours is just not enough with a low QE camera like the QHY12.
Always next year.

Cheers

Mediocre is a very strong word, ESP when comparing to multi million dollar research telescopes! Yes it's a bit noisy but some lovely detail in it.

It's a very nice image with nice colours.

Darn right, you should be well pleased with that outcome, and I can assure you it's far better than any M78 that I've captured!

I posted Robert's pic to show what's there, when captured with state of the art, moneys' no object research grade gear, and admittedly - it's incredible.

Equally incredible imo, is to get a fine result like yours, with far more modest gear, from one's own backyard. Well done

Yeah modest maybe Bill but still an image... and an image is an image

One day I'll give M78 a crack myself

Bill this object is very faint and I can say I invested a lot of time on this object about 4-5 years ago prior to automation and I really still feel I needed a lot more data. Imaging this object can be a beast, satisfaction is really of your own making. Keep at it. We don't have all we want in astronomy, if we did we would all be producing awesome images from gear in perfect seeing. It would get the same real quick. Keep getting out there and collecting data.
