Running Linux on a Canon DSLR

And the point is?

Seems these guys need a new hobby. Maybe they can try to run Linux on an EQ6.

It frees your laptop up so you can take high quality photos with it.

It's not a completely silly idea. The trend of "real" operating systems moving to smaller and smaller embedded devices (as they become more capable) has been going on for years. Why spend man-years building a proprietary OS when you can adapt an existing one and provide your application developers with a familiar environment and all the tools they need?

Cheers,
Rick.

Rick, I always need hugs. When you are on neighborhood

For new product development, it certainly makes sense. But to try and retrofit a GP OS onto a custom platform that already had it's own operating environment just says to me they are unemployed.

This is awesome and a great way to get around current problems with Canon's system, especially avoiding the firmware writes that could cause problems (read the thread for details).

I wonder if it will be possible to run a better INDI driver on it for use with ekos?

I'll keep you on my hug list next time I'm in Sydney, Trevor

They may be unemployed but I believe they do some very cool stuff. If I wasn't a Nikon guy I'd be using their stuff on my Canon camera.

Cheers,
Rick.

Yeah it's pretty neat, I can see the possibilities. For it to be practical, they'd have to strip a bunch of stuff out of the generic Linux kernel to make it useful on a small, dedicated, battery powered camera...but embedded Linux is all around us
