Imagine if it was shown conclusively that it was indeed unnatural ... would people care?

It's actually a compelling story, though ultimately its main use might be to illustrate how plausibility and likelihood are two very different things.

It's speculation. Makes you wonder about The Astrophysical Journal Letters.
The blurb on their website reads:

"The Astrophysical Journal Letters is an express scientific journal that allows astrophysicists to rapidly

publish short notices of significant original research. ApJL articles are timely, high-impact,

and broadly understandable."

Looks to me like some scientific folks are grabbing a bit desperately for their allotted 15 minutes of fame (thanks to Andy Warhol circa 1968 - "In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes".)

Yes Peter, and also a route to funding.
We are seeing this Phishing more and more.
Just in the last couple of years we have seen, the "Dyson Sphere" star
with the researching scientist raising thousands of dollars through the
popularizing of said "theory" or possibility of it being extraterrestrial.
Turns out it is dust, but she got her money and 15 minutes of fame, even a TV program to boot.
Another one that comes to mind is the Fast radio bursts" also putting out the
possibilities of being not natural.
One even turned out at Parks as the Microwave in the kitchen.
Soon they will be putting out adds on prime time TV.
Too many scientists in my opinion are putting out what can be taken as fact
but are really only conjecture coated in honey.
My two cents worth.

However, it is undeniably a fascinating object. Whatever the causes of the anomalies, we have something to learn here.

It's also way more compelling than uncle Jeb's 'bright lights/anal probe' stories.
