Observing spots near Byron Bay ?

Next Feb I am visiting Oz again for four weeks, fly into Brisbane and rent a car.
We plan to visit beautiiful Byron Bay (where I observed the 1986 lunar eclipse with Halley's comet) and bring my 11cm ED scope. Are there nice spots / observatories in northern NSW or southern QLD ? I know Gold Coast is horrible with light pollution is was already bad in 1986 when I stayed there.
Maybe Uluru is on the list, but I am not sure, I don't plan too much in advance.
