At least you have 14bit capture now instead of 12 bit. Gotta love that extra tonal range

Just wish they would start making 12, 14 and 16 bit monitors

And just where does one procure one of these desirable objects and how much is it?

Hi all,

I know this is a really old thread but I just wanted to clear up a few things... I'm the guy with the bad camera from Hutech. They would not exchange the camera but they did give me a full refund. They maintained that the banding I was seeing was normal. I still disagree. I went out and bought another 40D from a department store and it shows no sign of the banding. I'm pretty confident that I just received a "bad" camera.

I noticed where someone said to a 350D owner who had a similar issue, "why didn't you just return it?"... The thing about returning these cameras, especially to Canon or a retailer, is that they will always maintain that astrophotography is an extreme application of their equipment that was never intended. They'll say that under normal circumstances, the camera works just fine and the banding will never be seen. To them, it's as if you buy a regular car and complain to the manufacturer that it won't go 300MPH. The problem in this case though, is that I expected Hutech to understand the situation and exchange the camera (I wouldn't expect Canon to do that unless I REALLY complained). But, I can't complain too much since Hutech did stand by their agreement and refunded my money.

I also wanted to correct the URLs from my earlier post that was pasted here. I've since moved the images to a new location.

The updated URLs for the problematic images are:

And the updated URLs for the comparison 20D images are:

Anyway, I just wanted to make sure I'm not seen as the guy who warned against buying a 40D. It's a great camera and I highly recommend it. It just so happens that I got a "lemon". I also still endorse Hutech. I wish they would've exchanged the camera so I didn't have to go through all the hassle but they did stick to their word so I can't complain.

For those of you who do buy a 40D or any DSLR for astrophotography, be sure to give it a good test with long exposures under dark skies as soon as possible. Every camera manufacturer has an occasional "bad" one (not from their perspective necessarily, but from our astrophotographic perspective).

I hope that clears up some things!

Best,
Daniel Perry
