Observation Report 31 May 2008 NGCLes
Hi All,
After having just gone to my regular "nearly dark" site last night, I just realised tat I forgot to post some observations from my trip there last month.
So here they are -- well overdue.
It was a strange old night that started out cloudless and with no (apparent) prospect of cloud based on the satellite. None the less, by about 9.30 it was all grey and after waiting around for a couple of hrs for it to clear, we headed home. The seeing was variable between poor and almost mediocre for the most part. It did settle to become quite okay -- about 15mins before the cloud simply formed in situ over us. The SQM readings every 20 mins were hovering in the 20.9 to 21.1 range.
I still got to see a bit in the couple of hrs before the cloud arrived. For the most part it is in Virgo and there is one quite nice group of eight galaxies in one field near the end. Here are the observations:

This is a quite to very small eg, almost *ar, there are two nearby stars, the closest is to the NE by 2' about 14th mag, in a very barren field. Very small, looks very distant elliptical or lenticular 20" diameter rising mod and evenly to centre where the e is an occasionally visible threshold magnitude *ar nucleus.

This is an exceptionally faint eg found immediately to the W, 1.5' W of a 12th mag *. Extremely LSB, occasionally visible small ellipse of mist 1' x 20" in PA 0 with no visible brightening to centre. Threshold.

This is another very faint and tiny eg,. A tiny elong ellipse of gossamer about 20" x 10", very very LSB with a weak central brightening or nucleus.
-49 is 7' NW of -52.is equally faint and about the same size or a fraction smaller, 15" diameter, round and rises slightly to centre without nucleus. Both are very faint egs.

This eg is found almost immediately to the E of a mag 12.5 * probably by only 1'. Pretty small, 40-50" diameter, round, low SB rising broadly and slightly to the centre azonally without nucleus.

This eg is found in the same field as NGC 4260. By drawing a line from an 8th mag * NW through 4260 and extending it almost once lands on the eg. A very small and faint eg weakly elong in PA 15, it really is quite faint can be just held steadily with AV, 40" x 15" growing broadly and slightly to centre azonally without apparent nucleus.

This eg is found about 2' W of a 10th mag *. Fairly small, probably 40-50" diameter, mod faint, round growing from pretty indefinite edges evenly and slightly without zones and at centre is a suspicion of a very faint threshold spot or stellaring.

Best at x185, this is an exceptionally faint eg pointed at by the long side of a RA tri elong in PA 0, where the RA * is not involved in pointing at the eg. It is small, I think round, 30" diameter with no visible nucleus with exceptionally LSB. A whiff of gossamer.

Of these three -61 is the dominant member by far. It is a very bright eg. The three are in a line.
-61 is fairly bright -- elliptical type brightness profile, maybe 1.75' - 2.0' diameter brightening mod and evenly to the centre, and at centre is a very prominent stellaring or bright *ar nucleus. -64 is to the NE by 4'.
-64 has good SB, just on 1' diameter, round growing broadly and mod to centre with a small weakly brighter zone at centre. Quite bright, probably round. -57 is twice the distance from -61 but in the opposite direction -- to the SW.
-57 is a very small much fainter eg in about PA 60, 30" x 10" growing broadly and slightly to the axis near centre azonally and no apparent nucleus. Much fainter than the other two and lower SB.

This eg is a field N of the -61 group. It is a mod bright eg, pretty large eg which is elong in about PA 45, an oval shaped outline 1.5' x 30" with good SB halo with indistinct edges growing broadly and slightly to centre where there is a small 20" x 10" mod brighter core zone with an occasional stellaring at centre.

This group of 8 egs all fit in one ep field pretty comfortably in the 12mm field. Three dominate the view. -81, -73 and -70 in a triangle on the E side of the field.
-81 is a pretty bright eg, much elong in PA 90, about 2.25' x 40" with a faint-sized elong core which is mod brighter than the halo but no apparent nucleus. Overall had good SB. -73 is 8' SW.
-73 is a good sized good SB eg about 1.5' x 1.0' in PA 0, roundish oval growing slightly and broadly to the centre, slightly brighter core-zone but no apparent nucleus. It has a small companion 2' E -- this is -77
-77 is a very small and faint eg, round 20-30" diameter rising slightly to the centre but no apparent core or nucleus.
3' SW of -73 is -68 which is a small but mod bright elong eg about 1.25' x 20" in PA 45, rising mod and broadly to the axis nr centre but no zones, core or nucleus. Good SB, lens shaped
9' WNW of -73 is -59 which is a quite small pretty faint eg, round 20" diameter growing broadly and slightly to the centre azonally without nucleus. 3' E is IC 3153
-IC 3153 is a very tiny hardly seen threshold scrap of gossamer about 20" diameter, round and no central brightening.
-70 is N from -73 by 8' and is 3rd brightest in group. Elong in PA 120, slightly smaller than -73. 1.25' x 40" good SB growing broadly and slightly to centre azonally with a small, occasional stellaring at centre. -66 is 6' NNW adjacent to a mag 9 *. That star hinders observing considerably.
-66 is a very elong wispy lens of gossamer in PA 60, 1' x 15" with no discernible structure. Very LSB.
IC 4679 Galaxy *

This is a very small and faint elong eg in about PA 90 found nr an "L" shaped asterism of *s mags 10-11 to the N. It is a very LSB eg 1' x 30" growing broadly and weakly to the centre azonally without apparent nucleus. Quite to very LSB. Quite a starry field.
