Loving Canberra! Telescope score!!!

Been in Canberra a week now - it's more like home than home ever was. I think we will be here a VERY long time (besides it being 10° this morning with snow on the alps, and will be 6° tomorrow morning....it's summer in case you forgot Canberra! )

Anyhow, first garage sale score - was advertised on Gumtree, I saw the 'scope, and made sure I was there at opening time. So were 40 others, so I was pessimistic, but I got it!

Yosco rebadged Yamamoto (SYW) - Yamamoto was the cousin of Takahashi, was located in the same suburb, and actually provided lenses to the neophyte Takahashi. I think Tak took the machinery grey from them too (early Taks were blue grey instead of pale green). Interestingly, when Yamamoto closed, most employees went to Vixen. There are some strong similarities to early Vixens.

Complete, in the box, only missing one eyepiece, one washer for the tripod, and the finder crosshairs gone. All easily replaced/repaired (all done but the crosshairs). Box is named to a guy in...wait for it - Balmoral Heights, QLD A QLDer in Canberra finds a telescope owned by a QLDer in Canberra LOL.

Tube has some scratches, but the optics are immaculate. Paint will be redone to bring it back to pristine. All the prisms in the erect and regular diagonal are perfect. Some small dirt spots in the HM20, but that is OK - it's going to be mainly a lunar/planetary scope anyway. The mount is flawless, silky smooth, and as new - man they knew how to chrome things back then!

Yes, I know about those Sun filters, so no lecture/sermon. And no, I will NOT be throwing it away - it's part of it's history.

Not a bad score for $90 - I didn't even haggle the price.

Incidentally, the first light was beautiful through it - terrestrially, I was observing kangaroos and rabbits with beautiful sharpness and clarity, and a star test showed very well figured optics - not bad for an Achro At f/13.3, CA is quite nicely controlled.

Daughter No2 seems very interested in astronomy, even for a 3 year old, so will be a great way to introduce her to the stars.

I don't post on here very often but, that is a great score. Moving to Canberra just to buy a telescope is a bit extreme though !!!

Nice telescope Lewis. I am sure you will enjoy restoring it and using it.

I found a similar telescope at my school in a storage room, also with Japanese optics. It will make an interesting enrichment project to try to bring it back to its former glory by the students.

Nice score, and welcome to Canberra! When it gets to -9 deg C overnight, then you'll be cold! You're probably going to need a freezer suit if you don't already have thermals.

A group of locals sometimes gets together for a coffee - not sure when the next one might be but watch the forum for details when it next pops up.

Have you tried Don Rothman at Astronomy-Mall for the 1 inch eyepieces? He has sent me bits for my GP and GPDX mounts in the past and is a goldmine. I have Vixen 25mm Kellner and 9mm and 5mm Orthos but am hanging on to them. Worth finding though.

Looks like a nice pick up Lewis! Well done. I'm jealous, although I did get a (very) weatherbeaten 1950's Pentax 50mm f12 for free a couple of weeks back. The lens is in good nick though. Amazing optics in these old, long FL scopes!

Does this pseudo-Tak qualify you for a place at the "Tak Attack" this weekend?

You could try Claude at AEC for some 1" eyepieces: he has quite a few under "Miscellaneous stock".

All the best,

Dean

Had it out last night observing M42 with the H20. 4 Trapezium stars easily visible, vast nebulosity (my spot being much darker than my old home helps a lot), very nice contrast for an non-coated achromat and really razor sharp. Absolutely no discernible CA.

It's become my grab and go...you can lift the whole thing assembled and out the door with thumb and forefinger

Hard to read - very faded - but I will try!

EDIT: looks like Fifth Avenue, Balmoral Heights

small world , i lived a street beside fifth ave from early 60s to late 70's
eastern side of hill (my side) had nice elevated views towards the bay and surrounds and was darkish at night , as a terrestrial scope it would get use on the ave as most of it is quite high ,google main ave and see the views .
