Just a reminder that 'Atlas of the Southern Night Skies' (4th Edition) is now available from many outlets. Received my copy yesterday 05/10 in the post from AstroShop (no affiliation) well packaged and timely delivery via AustPost (also no affiliation).

Walked into the local newsagents and there it was on display along with the 2017 Astronomy calendar. So I bought it, happy to support our local businesses to stock good astro publications.

Cannot assist with your inquiry Neil. I'm relatively new to this hobby but have read glowing reviews in the past regarding this publication. I have been keeping an eye out as I heard about this 4th edition being released in late 2016. What I can say though it appears to be choc full of astro delights to aim for and observe in the next few years.

Neil they have basically corrected any mistakes and missing pages which sometimes occur in translation between editor and publisher and updated a few pictures other than that it is basically the same as the previous edition .

I picked up a 2nd edition for $1 at an opp shop yesterday. Loving the text so far! I imagine the 4th ed is even better

Wow a 4th edition! Only recently got the 3rd edition and quite enjoy reading it. Be good to know what has changed in the mew version.

If I may make a suggestion, to those who don't wish to accumulate a library of Astro books, buy the Night Sky Observers Guide instead. It is a lot more extensive, and instead of a couple of pages per constellation, you get over fifty pages for some of them. It's a three book series you will never finish using.

I have a shelf of books, and the gems that I use all the time for observing are the Night Sky Observers Guide, Hartungs and Interstellarum Deep Sky Atlas.

G'day.

If you are lucky enough to find a 3rd Edition of "Atlas of the Southern Night Sky" in an Op Shop, you will discover that the intended text for page 288 was replaced by a photo of NGC5128. (Should had been Deep-Sky Object Planner for September and October).

PDF of the 'missing' page was provided to me by the Publisher.

I have an revised 3rd edition of Atlas of the Southern Night Sky and page 288 is the required text as in the pdf addendum. The printers must have spotted the error and henceforth the revision!
And yes, the Night Sky Observers Guide is also a great resource, highly recommend it too.

Thanks for that very good tip also from myself Allan; I noticed there on sale at Bintel in Sydney .Will go check them out.

If you want to buy just one to start with, I suggest getting volume 3 which is for the southern sky. You will be able to use that volume every night of the year. Though I'm sure you will want all three volumes when you see how good they are.
