First Orion of the season!

Headed up to Maleny for some imaging. Had a terrible time driving up traffic causing a 2 hour drive to turn in to 4 hours grrr . But I'd say it was worth the drive, prestine clear skies from sunset to around 1 am. Saw some early Orionid meteor showers. Having recently subscribed to the adobe photographic package I tried my hand at processing solely through photoshop and light room. I gotta say I'm getting the hang of it . One of my best images so far, its good to know that I'm improving.

Taken with my 5D2 as I couldnt be stuffed dealing with QHY8 out in the field aha.

Mixture of 3 min @ iso1600 and 1 min @ iso800 for core (still havent got it perfect and needs tweaking)

Lovely and sharp, very nice, but for masking to correctly expose the
trapezium area you need some much shorter subs than 1min @800.
Keep on at 1600, but subs around 15secs or so. Take one sub at 15secs
and see what it looks like, and increase or decrease a little from there
as necessary.

I've uploaded a revised one with a little bit better core, can actually make out the trapezoid. You're probably right about needing shorter subs, i forget orions such a bright target

Quieten the core down some more, and saturate the colours a bit more
and you'll have a ripper. At present it looks a bit anaemic [IMHO].

You're right raymo, it was lacking a bit of colour. I forgot to saturate it

Nice one Tony I reckon you would have captured lots more faint extension too, if you dial back the Black clipping

It is looking pretty good at present but I do agree with raymo, when you’re doing the core changing the ISO has little to no affect if you’re not changing the exposure time. Shooting 15s exposures at ISO200 may even be worth while as it dramatically increases the dynamic range over ISO1600.

Looking good Tony. You've captured lots of nice details. I'm not sure if it's the monitor I'm viewing it on but the blacks look like they've been clipped just a fraction too much (which is easily fixed). Other than that there's not much else to critique. Nice work.

I hate that. I normally head out and go north of Perth after work on Fridays and driving through peak hour is a teeth grinder for sure!

reduced black clipping
I THINK ive reduced black clipping. I think when i was first processing (at 4 am in the morning after a 3 hour drive) i thought the extra dust was sky glow aha and removed them

Haha. I'm amazed that you could still function afterwards. I just saw that you tweaked it in the final version looks great.
