Buttons on an iPad screen - any ideas?

I like to use SkySafari on my iPad to slew and adjust by using the soft buttons on the edges of the screen.
Trouble with touchscreens is they have no tactile reference points so I have to look at the screen and set my finger positions before putting my eye to the eyepiece.
Has anyone tinkered around with ideas on how to put some sort of tactile reference points either on the screen directly, or on the sides so you can feel where your fingers should be?

Try using small dots of something like Bondic, like making your own braille. You'd need to make them small dots so the rest of your finger would still be able to touch the screen and register a "touch". I'd recommend using a screen protector underneath of course as you want a way or removing them.

Easier.

Find a shop that sells screen protectors and buy the thickest one you can find - mine is the best part of 1m.

Use an old-school hole punch to chop dots out of this.

Apply the dots where you wish. Transparent, and yet the touch bit will still work.
