UV Filter ?

Just spotted the earlier thread about using a 70-200 Tele lens for astrophotography. It's given me another project to keep me amused as I have a nice KM 70-300 f4.5 which gets little use these days.

When I did use it ( motorsports photography ) I ALWAYS had a good HOYA UV filter screwed onto the front, partially for the UV sheilding and partially for the anti rock protection which on Rally events was always a possiblity. Cheaper to replace a whacked filter than a whacked lens !!

Question is should this be removed for Astrophotography ? Goes against my grain as a Photog to do so protection wise.

... and yes, I did have to replace two over the years for rock damage. You can get pretty close to the action in Motorsports, especially Rallies.

I don't think it does any harm on an un-modded camera. I currently am tonight testing my camera with a 75 - 300mm lens and have a UV filter on the front. I might try to remove it see if it makes any difference.

If it's a UV/IR filter you'd be better off removing it so you get some of that IR in there.
Depends on the filter but a straight UV can stay on I'd imagine.

Didn't seem to make a difference for AP, mine is UV only.

Ooops, more info ...

Forgot to mention,

I'm not planning to use it on the DSLR but with my Celestron NexImage SSI which I assume has no filter over the CCD. Removal in that case may be relevant.

I intend to take the filter off anyway to reduce the chances of reflections, another shiny surface gone and I think the chances of it protecting the lens itself from a space rock are pretty minimal

IR/UV filters are used often on planetary, IR has the most benefit though provide better contrast with CCD.
