how to enlarge an image for cropping
Can somebody help this poor comp illiterate great grandpa find a simple way
to enlarge my images to bring the subject closer. I have some pics with sufficient resolution to keep a sharp image with the subject much closer.
I can downsize pixelwise in Irfanview, but the image retains the same physical dimensions, I want the subject larger.

If you use drizzling when combining and processing your images you have effectively enlarged them with decent resolution. Then you can crop what you don't need.

Hi Nikolas, I am no longer active in AP. It is just that I have a number of images [both astro and terrestrial] in my archives that are of high enough quality that I could enlarge them significantly and they would remain sharp.

Raymo,
Have you looked at upsizing the image in Irfanview, then cropping in 3D paint ( much easier than with Irfanview).

Raymo
I open Windows photo viewer , select image then open Paint ( not 3D paint ) crop and resize
Here’s my procedure in Windows 10
How to Crop and Resize an Image using Paint
1/ Select image in Windows Photo viewer
2/ Open image in Paint
3/ Go to frame size slider bottom right and slide to 50%
4/ On top tool bar left side , press dotted rectangle above “Select”
5/ Move mouse pointer over image and draw a square or rectangle over the area you want to crop
6/ Go to top tool bar and press “Crop”
7/ Image will be cropped but remain the same frame size
8/ To resize , press “Resize” and type in 50% for Horizontal and Vertical boxes
9/ Then select “Save As” , rename
and save in original folder
10/ Image will be cropped and resized ( same image size but smaller frame size )
Cheers
Martin

Hi Martin, I tried the link that Nikolas posted, and it works a treat, giving you
four images produced by different algorithms, so you can choose the one you like best, simple crop and download, and that's it.
cheers raymo
