Canon 1000D dead - what to replace it with

Hi all,

Well my Canon 1000d finally blew it's shutter. I do lots of timelapse stuff and managed to get at least 50,000 plus frames out of it.

I sent it back to Canon but the repair cost is about $490 and I can replace for $609 with a new one.

But what I thought is the noise of the 1000D isn't very nice especially taking into consideration that when shooting at night time I do ISO1600 for 30 seconds.

I've considered upgrading a little. What are peoples thoughts of getting a 450D or 50D body with regards to noise levels ?

Cheers,

- Steve

That's not very good Steve - and is well short of (half) what I'd accept as a baseline figure for number of shutter actuations.

Here's and interesting paragraph from a user on Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/groups/1000d/d...7622666282352/

Quote:
Canon USA recently provided me with the shutter life rating figures for the Rebel T1i, XSi and XS bodies (below). These were previously not disclosed by Canon - The 50D-matching values from this low end model surprised me. While some of us have no trouble shooting 100,000 frames in a year, this number of frames would represent multiple lifetimes for others.

Model Shutter Durability Rating
Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS / 1000D 100,000
Canon EOS Digital Rebel T1i / 500D 100,000
Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi / 450D 100,000
Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi / 400D 50,000
Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT / 350D 50,000
Canon EOS 50D 100,000
Canon EOS 40D 100,000
Canon EOS 30D 100,000
Canon EOS 20D 50,000
Canon EOS 7D 150,000
Canon EOS 5D Mark II 150,000
Canon EOS 5D 100,000
Canon EOS 1D Mark IV 300,000
Canon EOS 1D Mark III 300,000
Canon EOS 1D Mark II N 200,000
Canon EOS 1DS Mark III 300,000
Canon EOS 1DS Mark II 200,000
LOL! My old Nikon F's each have well in excess of a million actuations each and are still going strong - far in excess of their conservatively "rated" figures. If I were still into film they'd still be used every day. They don't make them like they used to... Truth be known, the newer Nikon DSLRs are probably no better than the Canons in this regard either.

Pick up a second hand 5D for under a grand.

Arguably one of the finest DSLRs Canon has ever made.

100,000

Believe it or not the camera is only 18 months old and I didn't think I would need an extended warranty. Hey lesson learnt. Next new camera will have the longest warranty I can afford.

The 5D would be nice but I've got EF-S lenses.

I may be able to afford a 7D but I'll be needing new accessories with it.

Full frame - give me another 10 years !

Cheers,

Steve

Well I've had another look at the 7D.

Using the http://www.the-digital-picture.com/R...ra-Review.aspx review I can't see lots of difference between the noise levels of the APS-C cameras. Of course the 5D does stand out presumably due to the full frame sensor.

The RAW files on the 7D are 14 bit whereas the 1000D is only 12 bit. Now my small understanding here is that I may get more room between the noise and the image ??

Something I do like about the 7D is that it can do Medium and Small RAW files because lets face it I only really need up to 2000 pixels wide for doing video. Converting a 1400 frame RAW sequence into a SD TV video from the 1000D in After Effects on my quad core, raid video editing machine was a really slow process.

But can I justify the $800 difference between the 7D and the 50D ? I can get a 7D body only in Oz for $1899. On top of this I'll need to upgrade my intervalometer connections which is a new AC adaptor and shutter trigger connection. Oh and move over to CF cards. Anyone need 2 x 16Gb SD cards ?

Anyhow I'll continue to nut it out.
