DSLR Flats ? mono or native

Hi all, Merry xmas !
I read in the back of one of my Astrophotography books that this photographer, when using DSLR converts his flats to mono as you are only correcting abnormalities in illumination ?
Do people do this?
When I shoot NE I am over Hobart's light dome so I always thought if I shot some sky flats there as well they would help correct for sky gradient, even at dusk/
Am I barking up the wrong Xmas tree?
Cheers
Graham.

Unless you shoot 'Flats' exactly in the region you're imaging, you're going to risk introducing dissimilar gradients.

Best to do proper flats using a Light Box or similar method.
I've tried Sky Flats but wasn't happy so built my own Light Box.

I thought that software like DSS only uses the luminance data from flats and not colour. it is like the author is doing that manually. I have never bothered converting.

cheers
