Hello and Thankyou :)

HI and thanx for all your help and advice in advance it will be very much appreciated

Im a complete beginner and am starting out with my old 350D ive got an 18 - 55 mm lens a 55 - 200 mm and a straight 50 mm lens.
I live near newcastle and am wondering what are some good starting out targets? also recommendations for camera settings etc

Your best bet Shaun would be to look in the image section for recent pictures that have been taken and to glean the info from there.

On a side note, how's your relationship with your bank manager?
.....if you hang around here long enough you'll be needing him!

Welcome Shaun.
There is a lot of fun to be had with a humble 50mm lens. At this time we have the southern cross earlier in the evening. As the night rolls on pointing towards Sagittarius is a good idea as you'll be looking into the centre of our galaxy where there is so much going on

If you're just on a standard tripod you'll probably be wanting to use closer to 18mm for a nice wide angle shot. At 18mm you could probably look at using 20-30s shots with a wider aperture and you'll be able to pick up quite a bit of detail.
