Solar active area???

Just testing the SM60/PST Mod DS with a new focuser (to replace the Borg helical) Looks very promising.....

BUT, there's a bright active area visible near the centre of the solar disk - unexpected.
Nothing on Raben, but shows on the latest SOHO (just).
Well worth the look (and possible imaging - I've got terrible wind buffeting down here....) also check out the large filaprom...

Gday Ken
I can see both
Today is the first day since i broke my ankle i could get out and set everything up safely.
Left my old damaged filter in place then had a look, and it was dim as anything with no detail.
Stuck in the new maier unit and am now blind in one eye
The view is magic, even for a single stack, and soooooooo much brighter.
Using a Meade 13.8SWA, the filaprom is clear as a bell and once you mentioned the central area, i retuned the etalon and can start to make it out.
Wooohooooooooooo, and its supposed to be clear most of the day
Might even try to get out the Lunt80 DS, but thats a lot heavier to set up ( and a tad more expensive if i drop it )

Whoooo..........
Just got back from the workshop and had another look at the active area...hardly visible against the solar background .... and as I watched it brightened up dramatically definitely the brightest area on the disk - must have been a flare - I hope someone was imaging at 11:02....
Well worth watching - there may be some interesting events......

Incredibly bright in Ha - way too much dynamic range for my camera!

All done with an ASI120MM. It behaves really well in the 152 and the 50 for some reason

Here's the CaK and Full Spectrum versions. The cluster of sunspots were developing nicely by the time the sun was 'treed' to the West.

Certainly more impressive in H alpha.
I use the ASI 174 for solar imaging and need the T2 tilter to suppress the NR....

I used a 2x Barlow on the Ha which I suspect of introducing the rings. It may well be clear over the next few days, so I'll get a chance to test it properly.

BTW I'm currently tossing up between the 174 and 178. Decisions decisions...
