What is going on with Sydney Weather?

Watching the weather radar today has been fascinating. Just 100kms to the south of my place it looks like the black hole of death, yet from my observatory i canmot see a cloud in the sky, even looking south. Now maybe its headed this way, but it seemed to skirt just south of Hornsby on radar. My daughter had lots of hail in Baulkham Hills. You guys down there have my sympathy.

Black hole, indeed, I’m right under it.
It’s pelting ice cubes and enough rain to fill our Japanese coin bowl so maybe 30-40mm.

The street is very quiet - the hail has cleared most cars off the pacific highway even.

Apart from the rain now, the cockatoos are rather upset by the soaking.

It’s going to repeat again in 15 mins.

It’s also a big system - the radar shows it extends to Wollongong.

Maybe a good time for some housekeeping
Tidy up and re arranging your files and folders
Clean mirrors
Re collimate
Lubricate mechanical parts
Check cables
Clean eye pieces
Print and frame some of your best images
Buy some more Astro bits and pieces

and wait and be patient until the weather clears in a week .......... ?

Now that it's dark I can see the lightening flashes off on the southern horizon. No thunder, it's too far away I guess.

“But wait, there’s more !”

Yes Glen quite a good light show passed right overhead.

Third drenching starting - here we go again. And there’s another wave to follow. Not really surprising - I was west of Parramatta during the day and the sea breeze was really pumping warm humid air in all day long.

We had a decent storm last night too, first good one we'd had all summer I reckon...we usually get a load more (especially in Nov/Dec)

Beautiful morning today though

It was brutal in Western Sydney last night too. Shopping for a few "electrical bits and pieces" right now. They said to expect more tonight in the morning news.

Send it up here. Even ice cubes are better than drought.

Severe thunderstorms down here between about 6:00 pm and 9:00 pm last night but no hail around here that I could see. There was the upside hopefully is some water for the dams and parks and gardens. After midnight the sky cleared, was nicely transparent but a bit shifty in the seeing conditions though. Had a great time for a few hours touring around many old favourites and a few new ones with the 250mm dob.
