What a storm...

Southern Tassie got hammered last night. I'm on the lee side of a mountain and it was like a WWI barrage. Lots of damage everywhere. Have not seen horizontal hail before!

Sure the house was not blown onto its side

Seen horizontal rain and I still dont believe what I saw so horizontal hail would really be something.

Hope everyone came through it ok.

Utas has been smashed up pretty bad and parts of The Royal Hobart hospital are being evacuated. Centre of city has extensive damage. Rocks 6" in diameter all over the roads here and a lot of the local farm dams aren't there any more. Everyone I know has damage including where I work. My 22,000 lt tanks were half full last night and are gushing today... I live on the side of a hill and the rain has blotted out the entire valley. Still coming in almost horizontal at times

Alex, to answer your question... I just bought the materials for my ROR roof and moved my 22" OTA for final stages of construction. I doubt I'll even be able to get to my dark sky site for a few days to assess damage, and I suspect the access roads will be completely gone this time. Bloody epic storm... still can't believe it happened.

Wow, - I know there's not much to do over here in the west, lol, but we rarely have to put up with that sort of weather either, thankfully

Forecast for the next 7 days is totally sunny with smatterings of 29C on Sunday and possibly a cloud on Tuesday. It's a tough call, lol.

Record wave measured in Southern Ocean

Peter Hannam in the Sydney Morning Herald reports that the largest wave
ever recorded in the southern hemisphere was detected by a buoy in
the Southern Ocean moored at Campbell Island off New Zealand's
South Island.

The wave measured 23.8 metres in height.

storm

[QUOTE=el_draco;1372928]Utas has been smashed up pretty bad and parts of The Royal Hobart hospital are being evacuated.

I was at there Thursday night, just got my car out of the car park and around the corner as the rivulet started to overflow. I have never seen anything like it- the noise was horrific. On the way home it was like being underwater. The roads were filled with debris and storm drains were fountains.
My Wife was in tears as I got home as there was water torrents coming down the drive and through the front door and more coming through the roof.
What stopped major damage was that the force of the water peeled the surface off my drive (gravel) and deposited it at the front door making a natural dam. Crazy weather.

I just got power back, transformer down the road came back on line Friday morning for a few minutes and then failed. Last night, it pretty much exploded. Had rocks the size of grapefruit all over the roads here... but we got off really lightly. Next valley over has no roads or bridges anymore, just a river where a little stream used to run.

I got to my dark site today, and it was completely untouched. The storms came in on a specific path and a couple of kilometres either side, the damage was minimal. What a friggin ride!

It's been almost dry in Sydney. I'm on tank water in Arcadia and it's only half full. Still waiting for the 100mm downpour since last year. The Tassie event is pretty unusual. Is this climate change?

Nah, its all been caused by that big fat battery in S.A. that will lead to the collapse of civilisation as we know it... the Greenie conspiracy at work...
