2" barlow and Imaging experiment

My mate has just lent me his 2" 2.5x barlow for an experiment.

He heard thru the grape vine that you can unscrew the lens end (excuse my ignorance with correct terminology) and screw it into the filter thread on a 2" extension tube and use it to increase magnification when taking images.

The theory is that you could double the magnification of your imaging scope

I'm imaging with a DSLR and a field flattener. Has anyone heard of this or given it a go?

Regards
Carl
