Precise drilling on digitized cross bed

I think the images are worth thousand words...

Cost: $75 for cross bed, $15 for digital calipers (ebay)

Those digital calipers are useful. My son and I both find you need to take out the battery when not in use as the switch only turns off the display and the battery goes flat pretty quickly.

Nice idea, do you think the calipers can handle the vibration?

I think they will be OK, the vice is pretty heavy, calipers are fixed on 3mm aluminium plates.. I didn't notice any display errors during drilling.
If this prove to be the problem, second set of two metal calipers is already on its way here ($5-$10).
Actually, in the beginning I was planning to use the metal variety, but I placed the wrong order on ebay for those plastic ones.. and apparently they proved to be quite OK for the purpose
As for the batteries, once they are flat, I will use external power supply.

A brilliant project Bojan!
There is a site I once saw which explained how to read the serial
output of these calipers which is on a pinout under a removable cover.
SIte should be found by maybe an IIS search with verniers and Kinetic,
Can't find the site right now (I'm on a clunky android phone) but I remember
doind a post about it once.
Serial data stream is a peculiar non-standard format but readable with
a serial logger.

One more thing, these calipers need to stay oil and grime free, otherwise you
get wierd readouts. My lathe caliipers are the best $29 I ever spent

Another use would be on the 10:1 crayford style focusers. I remember doing
a post about that too.

Instead, I found those on the web, similar:

Brilliant Bojan.

I am re-designing my Foucault tester around an industrial drawe slide and digital calipers.
