QSI583wsg price drop

Bintel are advertising the QSI583wsg for $4899. That appears to be nearly $1200 off last weeks price.

I think the wsg is almost a complete package but still need to buy filters though.

Any thought on this as a deal?

Frank

QSI have dropped prices on their 583 range due to popluar demand and higher volumes. In turn Bintel I assume have lowered their pricing to reflect QSI's news updates.

QSI have a free mailing list signup on their website if interested.

Its very good. With the OZ$ being high, its almost on a par with OPT (with GST freight etc).

And it has the OAG/filterwheel built in, AND the filter is so close to the chip that it uses 1.25" filters.

With all these built in features and the much cheaper filters (becuase they are smaller) than any other 8300 cam, its tempting indeed.

An albiet extreme example of filter savings. a 1.25" 3nm Ha Astrodon filter is US$395, a 50mm square version is US$1055 (round $895)

1.25" Astrodon LRGB set $450, 50mm $825.

36mm are somewhere in between (if you can wait some random time for a wheel to appear, by anyone).

I havent done detailed math, but any other 8300 chip cam with a filter wheel, OAG and a full set of quality filters is likely to cost much more.

The down side is if you upgrade to a bigger cam later, the 1.25" filters will need replacing.

Thanks for bringing that to our attention Frank.

I have been tempted a few times to get a 583wsg but have always resisted. I have a set of 1.25" colour filters but without IR blocking, an IR filter and an Astronomik H-alpha. I have also been having reasonable success lately using a Meade OAG and starshoot autoguider. Previously my efforts with an OAG were hopeless. My DSLR pictures though have been disappointing.

All the talk here recently re various 8300 based cameras has scrambled my brain. It seems to me if you have relatively good equipment, attention to detail and some talent good images will follow (though I'm a bit short on talent). This price may be what makes me jump to QSI

Neale.

Neale,

The problem for me has been the same. There are so many 8300 based imagers, I am not exactly sure what sets them apart. I think the cooling is one aspect. The ATIK 383L is set to arrive shortly as well.

Also the small pixel size of the 8300 has put me off a little. Binning 2x2 may be the answer but I am not sure it is the perfect answer as the full well depth on this chip is not huge either.

I suppose there has to be some compromise somewhere.

Frank

Awesome deal.. Heres a quick comparison...

ST8300M - $2880
CFW 2-7 - $1540 all up (includes taxes, customs duties and shipping)
Astrodon LRGB 50mm round filters - $950 delivered from the states
Astrodon 5nm Ha/S2/O3 50mm round filters - $1850 delivered + taxes etc
Lumicon OAG - $375.

Total - $7595

Vs.

QSI583WSG - $4899
Astrodon 1.25" LRGB - $480 landed (approx)
Astrodon 5nm Ha/S2/O3 1.25" - $1050 landed (approx)

Total $6429

Couple that with the fact that my camera/CFW/OAG setup weighs in at about 2.6kgs, when I add the flattener and the required extension and guide cam its over 3kgs. I'm struggling to find a focuser that will hold it steady... The QSI weighs a lot less.. and your OAG is behind your flattener, giving you better stars to guide with.. my OAG has to be placed before the flattener for backfocus reasons, meaning I guide on some pretty ugly looking stars sometimes..

The QSI is a great deal.

Hmm.

QHY9 with free filter wheel and LRGB 2" filters $3000 AU and about $25 delivered anywhere in AU.

Why is it only Sbig and QSI for you people.
The QHY9 is still the cheapest camera with a 8300 chip on it

No i am not affiliated with QHY

But be realistic people, the QHY is in this market too.

Martin - Price isn't the be all and end all of the "what do I buy" prerequisites. The original poster is asking about the QSI583WSG, and I made comparison in price to the ST8300 because that's what I bought, and I knew the prices off the top of my head..

That wasn't our way of saying "dont buy a QHY9" it was simply the original poster asking the question about a specific product, and me offering a comparison between what the OP asked about, and what I bought.

Hi Alex it is not what you have said but what Fred said.
"I havent done detailed math, but any other 8300 chip cam with a filter wheel, OAG and a full set of quality filters is likely to cost much more."

And the OAG doesn't come with many camera's anyway.

That deal has expired. It's $3K for the camera alone.

Starzonia says it expires on the 15th and Gama Electronics says the 1st, ccd-labs says through march.
Where ya gonna buy? Mine is back to theo for it's second visit this year. But that's off topic.

Doesn't the QSI have single stage cooling? Twill only get to -10C if it is ..
