A quick one? QHY OSC cameras and Narrow band imaging.

Hi all,

Just a query, can you use Narrow Band Filters ie. 7nm Ha or OIII, on the OSC cameras such as the QHY8L?

If so, what filters would be best suited? Would the wider >10nm filter be better than the narrower ones?

Short answer yes. I use the baader set. 7nm. Mono with higher QE would be best for narrowband though but there's nothing wrong doing it with an OSC. You'll lose a bit of details when debayering that's all.

This might be a dumb question, but on the same theme as Andrew is requesting, can one use a DSLR as well for narrow band?

Good Q Pete. If it's modded, I think it might be able to work... Pretty much the same thing as a dedicated CCD then. But I could be wrong

I just checked with Doug (Hagar) he seems to think they will, but in Ha everything will come out red, so would have to de-saturate to B/W. Just a thought anyway.

Yep, or replace the red channel with the Ha data?

It will work, but, won't be as sensitive. You will need to spend eons to get any data.

I think Narayan had done some Hubble palette stuff with his modified camera.

DSLR - Yes, modded.
I have clip in 12nm Ha and OIII filters which give results I'm happy with.
Examples...
Horsehead in Ha

Tarantula in OIII

Also done synthetic RGBs too,

Taken with Astronomik EOS clip in filters in the modded 40D

I get asked this question a lot.
Yes it will work.
You can also cover 26 miles by running the marathon.

Driving the distance is a whole lot easier.

The reasons for OSC not being a great choice for Narrow Band are two fold.
1) the NB filter you'll make about 2/3rds of your OSC pixels useless.
2) the NB filter will act as a neutral density filter over the remainder.

Heroic exposures will garner some signal, but a mono sensor is a much better way to go...

I've tried it with a 6nm Astronomik Ha and a QHY8 - seemed to work ok.

I just got (today) a 12nm Astronomik Ha and plan to use this with my QHY8pro.

Thankyou to all that replies, plenty to think about, I am still tossing between mono and colour, but leaning more towards mono at this stage. My goal would be to use the scopes for narrow band imaging but also cometary imaging and widefield imaging so having the mono chip may be better for picking up those faint fuzzies.

If anyone has anything else to add please do so, it would be helpful to others with the same ideas.
