Its been a while since i have put up an image. Its been so cloudy here lately and when its the rare clear night im normally hammered from work and dont get outside.
Last friday was one of those but after 2 stong coffees i got inspired.
Had a bit of dewing problems (forgot to use my homemade hood) but i think im pushing the C90 a bit.
Ill try the cheapy Newts next time at least theres more aperture.

Comments like this keep me motivated to go outside even when I've been outside all day working in it and the couch is beconing!
I still have some 15 second subs that I havent even looked at yet but I probably wont need them as I recon the core is ok.
Also have some 180 sec subs but bad alignment is showing.
Ive got a DBK21AF618 camera I still havent even tried out yet so thats next project, to get guiding together.
Its going to warm up soon, that means bugs so my laptop is a magnet.
Cant wait to build my observatory.

Just tried something.
I recombined each file after DSS has done its stacking darks, bias subtracted and ran the files back through DSS with no darks etc. I have over processed the image but it seems sharper in the dust lanes etc but I know the core is blown out.
Is this the right way to do it when you have different length subs or put the whole lot including the different length darks into DSS and stack the whole lot or use Photoshop and blend the finished subs?
Its just that I have differnt length darks according to each group of subs.
Does DSS work this out when the whole lot is together?
I know I added the stack of 60 x 15 sec, and 4 x 120 sec from DSS to the image but when I tried the photoshop way it didnt look as good as the 30sec, 60 sec combo.
Also when choosing the reference sub in DSS is it just the best score or do you analyze it other ways?

Getting deeper into the dark art of processing and its starting to look like there are multiple different ways eventually get the same result but then you can get multiple different images using the same data.
Hope this all makes sense as my head is spinning a bit.

Go for 20 darks for each of your sub lengths. I have a few different dark masters from 40 to 60 sec and reuse them lol or if I've forgotten to take them that night. I do 20 dark, flats and bias and seems to work well.
I've copied subs before when I was only able to get say 25 and make it triple or quad before stacking, I've notice it sharpens it.
I find the best sub for a reference before I start stacking regardless of star count e.g good round stars and no tails.
Doesn't matter on light sub times dss will stack them but will warn you that it noticed different times, not sure if you have to match darks but I would anyway.
When I did Orion I did 30 sec subs I think maybe 20 sec, but not enough of them.
I was using a Newt which I see you have, have a go with it next time.

Fantastic image and heaps of detail for such a short time.
When i look at my attempt its nowhere near the quality.
What im trying to get at is if you have 30sec, 60,sec and 120sec subs can they be stacked at the same time with 30sec , 60sec, and 120sec darks and DSS magically works it out.
Or is it better to stack 30sec subs with 30sec darks and then stack the finished images later.
Ive looked around for info but i still havent found it yet
I get the warnings but how important is it having the exact maching lenght darks.
Ive got 2 cheapy type newts and the better one wont focus with a dslr ( have to move the primary forward a little).
Ill give the crappy one a go if its not too cloudy in the early mornig.
Need to get myself a decent newt!!
